What are serious games?

Serious Games are games used for purposes beyond entertainment. They are used by a range of different organizations including corporations, cultural institutions, state agencies and other legal entities. Serious games are games with purposes beyond entertainment. They can be used to educate customers about products and services and their features through interactive play as well as to educate new or existing employees about organizational processes, changes or similar topics.

Why serious games?

Games represent a universal language for playing, learning and communicating and have outgrown other popular media in importance. Games have predominantly been in use for leisure purposes but they add real value in educational contexts as well. Games allow for immersive experiences by allowing the user to get close to relevant challenges and actively make decisions while experiencing the consequences. Games can be a strong vehicle for improving the user’s ability to remember what is learned.

Can games deliver measurable results?

Serious games are often designed to ensure data on usage and performance is captured. This enables easy evaluation of the actual usage and performance. Many e-learning solutions have been designed to extend the reach and flexibility of traditional teaching methods. In these solutions existing materials are made available online but the content and learning approach remain the same. Focus is on convenience and improving access to information but less on effective learning. Serious games engage the user and uses interaction to positively affect motivation, comprehension and retention. Games encourage learners to engage in active learning. They can deliver measurable and effective results for any organization, which makes for a compelling and engaging learning experience.

How long time does it take to develop a game?

Development time naturally depends on the specific game, however as a general rule of thumb, it takes on average 2-5 months to develop a game.
