Copenhagen, Denmark, January 19, 2011
Danish game developer Serious Games Interactive (SGI) has been participating in a collaborative EU project called Playmancer - a project that has been running for 42 months and is coming to an end. The aim of this innovative project is to investigate the potential of computer games in the health care sector.
SGI's role has been to integrate input from various devices such as heart rate or motion tracking into the Unity game engine and then design a game supporting the rehabilitation a patient. The project includes two different patient groups: Chronic pain patients and patients suffering from various mental illnesses, such as binge eating and chronic gambling.

To record the patients movements, heart rate and other inputs, he/she has to wear a motion tracking suit equipped with various sensor. The input from those sensor is registered and used to control the movements and condition of the person in the game. On the screen you can see the virtual version of yourself walking around on a island. So how is exploring an island going to help different patient groups?
The game is specially developed to help patients recognize their emotions, regain self-control, train certain movements and relax specific muscles. The game can actually recognize some specific emotions such as boredom, excitement and anxiety in patients and their cognitive responses. This is done with the help of emotion recognition technologies and biosensors. Watch a news feature on EuroNews about the project.
Elias Kalapanidas, the Coordinator for the PlayMancer project, says: “This game goes beyond virtual reality. Virtual reality reproduces the surrounding environment, but it offers no rewards system. Our aim was to motivate patients to know their body and mind better. Video games are entertaining and motivating, so we thought they can provide effective complimentary therapies in different diseases. This video game is like a bonding factor between patients and their therapists and doctors.”
“This research project has been a very exciting journey for us, where we have pushed our limits as game developers. We will continue to contribute to innovative initiatives such as Playmancer, because we believe in the benefits of serious games. We have just begun exploring the possibilities for games in the health care sector. In the future people might receive computer game prescriptions for some of their health problems - time will tell.” says Mikkel Lucas Overby, Commercial Director at SGI.
